If you've just arrived, your first decision is your pathway, not your school. UAE/GCC and many European, North American, and other approved licences can be exchanged directly without lessons; some nationalities qualify for the faster 'Golden Chance' route; everyone else does the full beginner programme. Once you know your pathway, opening your file and doing the eye test are quick. Both can be sorted online through TAMM or at the school — you don't need a typing centre for most steps anymore.

Speed and lane-discipline cameras are common on the main corridors, and tailgating/lane-discipline fines are actively enforced. Keep to the right unless overtaking.

Renewals, replacing a lost licence, and updating your details are all done on TAMM — most without visiting a centre. Pay attention to renewal eye-test requirements as you get older.

Paid street parking on the island is managed by Mawaqif, and toll gates (Darb) apply on several Abu Dhabi entry points and bridges — worth registering a Darb account if you drive between the island and the mainland regularly.
