The island's roads are modern and well-marked: the fast Yas Marina road, the calmer residential streets of Yas Acres and West Yas, and the roundabout-heavy access roads near the attractions. That variety makes it good all-round practice.

YDA at Yas Marina Circuit, plus an EDC service centre at Yas Mall

Yas Island is home to Yas Driving Academy (YDA), yda.ae — campus at Yas Marina Circuit, with a registration/file-opening kiosk at Al Wahda Mall (Sat–Thu, including late-night slots). EDC has also opened a service centre at Yas Mall for simulator and service access. EDC's main campus in Mussafah is ~25–35 min away.

Eye test for your licence

Any TAMM-approved optical centre, or your driving school

The driving-licence eye test was privatised in 2021. Major opticians such as Al Jaber Optical, Yateem and Grand Optics are approved, and the result is sent in digitally. Find the nearest approved centre with the TAMM 'Driving Institute, Optician or Translation Centre' locator on tamm.abudhabi.

Paperwork & licence file

Online via TAMM, or the YDA kiosk at Al Wahda Mall

Most paperwork is online through TAMM. For Yas-area residents, the YDA kiosk at Al Wahda Mall also handles registration and opening a driving-licence file in person.

The driving test

YDA administers the road test on Yas-area routes

If you train with YDA, your road test runs on routes around Yas Island and nearby Abu Dhabi roads — different from EDC's Mussafah routes, so local familiarity helps.

Living on Yas and starting out is convenient — YDA is right here, and its fast-track format suits people who want to finish quickly. EDC has also opened a service centre at Yas Mall for simulator and service access, so some admin can be handled on the island too. Still, check your pathway with the free quiz first: if your home licence can be exchanged, you may not need the full programme at all.

YDA students train across the island's variety: the wide circuit-adjacent roads for speed and lane discipline, the roundabouts near Yas Mall for intermediate work, and the calm West Yas / Yas Acres streets for parking and control. A private instructor familiar with YDA's specific test routes can sharpen you for test day. If you're with EDC, its Yas Mall service centre offers simulator access on the island.

Tip: If you'll test with YDA, look for an instructor with YDA route experience specifically — the Yas-area test routes differ from EDC's Mussafah routes, so local knowledge matters.

I just passed

Newly licensed on Yas, the adjustments are event-day traffic surges (concerts, races, Ferrari World peaks) and the bridges connecting to the mainland and Saadiyat. Outside event times the island is one of the easier places to drive in Abu Dhabi.

I've been driving a while

Yas sits within the Darb toll network on its connecting routes, so a registered account is worth having. Parking at the attractions and malls is mostly free or validated. Renewals and admin are on TAMM.
