Al Ain is not a district of Abu Dhabi city. It is the emirate's second city, about 130 km inland on the Omani border, and everything about learning to drive here happens locally: local schools, local test routes, local instructors. If you live in Al Ain, an instructor based on Abu Dhabi island is a two-hour round trip away and almost never the right choice.
The driving itself is calmer than the island. Wide boulevards, generous roundabouts and far lighter traffic make it a forgiving place to learn. The trade-offs are specific to here: roundabouts everywhere rather than signalled junctions, livestock and camels on the outskirt roads, and Jebel Hafeet — a 1,240 m mountain climb with sustained gradients and hairpins that most new drivers meet for the first time after they pass.

You do not travel to Mussafah. EDC runs an Al Ain branch on the same 600 588 880 booking line, and several licensed private schools operate in the city — United Motor Driving School, Al Ain National Driving School and Arwa Car Education School among them. Confirm current course prices with the school directly before paying; they are set per school and change.
The driving-licence eye test was privatised in 2021. Major opticians such as Al Jaber Optical, Yateem and Grand Optics are approved, and the result is sent in digitally. Find the nearest approved centre with the TAMM 'Driving Institute, Optician or Translation Centre' locator on tamm.abudhabi.
Opening your file, booking and most licence paperwork are handled online through TAMM or the TAMM app — no typing centre needed for most steps. Your driving school can also open the file for you, and TAMM service points across the city handle anything that needs to be done in person.
As everywhere in the emirate there is no standalone test centre — the road test is run by whichever school you train with, under the Integrated Transport Centre. The difference here is the routes: they cover Al Ain's roundabouts and city streets, not the island's bridges and multi-lane arterials. An instructor who trains in Abu Dhabi city is preparing you for the wrong test.

If you have arrived in Al Ain with a licence from home, the rules are the same as anywhere in the emirate: residents must convert to a UAE licence, and whether you can exchange it directly or need the Golden Chance route depends on which country issued it. That decision is national, not local, so use the licence checker before you book anything.
One thing that is genuinely different here: you will need a car sooner. Al Ain is spread out, public transport is thinner than in the capital, and distances between residential districts, malls and the university are real driving distances.

I just passed
The first surprise for most new Al Ain drivers is not traffic, it is the roundabouts — multi-lane, frequent, and unforgiving if you are in the wrong lane on approach. Getting lane discipline right on a few of the bigger ones is worth more than general practice.
The second is livestock. Camels and goats on unfenced outskirt roads are a genuine hazard, particularly at dusk, and a collision with a camel is not a minor accident. Slow down when you leave the built-up grid.
I've been driving a while
Jebel Hafeet is the local rite of passage: a long, steep, well-surfaced climb with hairpins and sustained descents. Use a low gear on the way down rather than riding the brakes, and be aware that the temperature and gradient are hard on a car that is already marginal.
The Abu Dhabi and Dubai runs are the other regular drives — long, fast, monotonous highway stretches where fatigue and speed enforcement matter more than technique. Al Ain has no Darb toll gates, so the tolls only start when you reach the capital.

No. EDC has an Al Ain branch and there are licensed private schools in the city, so training, the knowledge test and the road test all happen locally. Only the paperwork is central, and that is online through TAMM.
Are Al Ain road tests easier than Abu Dhabi's?

Is Jebel Hafeet safe for a new driver?
It is a well-built road, but the sustained gradient is unlike anything else in the emirate. Wait until you are comfortable, go up before you go down in traffic, and use engine braking on the descent instead of riding the brakes.
