What Are Black Points?
Black points (also called demerit points) are penalty markers added to your driving record whenever you commit a traffic violation. Unlike fines, which are one-time financial penalties, black points accumulate. Reach certain thresholds and your licence is automatically suspended or permanently cancelled.
The system is designed to identify and remove dangerous drivers from the road before a serious accident occurs. Every violation adds a set number of points regardless of whether you pay the corresponding fine — the two are independent.

Points stack from every violation. Consider a straightforward scenario: three mobile phone violations (at their standard rate each) can put you more than halfway to suspension. Add a speeding violation and a red-light offence and you are at or near the threshold within a few months of driving.

When Do Points Expire?

A driver accumulating violations regularly maintains a high running total because new points keep arriving before old ones expire.

Certain violations carry enough points to trigger or approach suspension on their own. These are the ones to prioritise:

What Happens During a Licence Suspension
- You cannot legally drive any vehicle — yours or anyone else’s
- Driving while suspended is a criminal offence, not just a traffic violation

- The suspension must be served in full; there is no early release option
- After the suspension period ends (3 months for a first offense), your points reset to zero and you regain your driving privileges
How Points Are Cleared
There are two routes:
- Wait 12 months without any new violations. Points from violations older than 12 months expire automatically.
- Attend an approved refresher or defensive driving course. Some approved courses can reduce your black points balance by a small number of points. Contact the ITC (Integrated Transport Centre) or ask a certified instructor about courses that qualify for point reduction.

Do violations from other emirates (Dubai, Sharjah) count toward my Abu Dhabi point total?
Yes. The UAE traffic system is unified. Points from any emirate accumulate on your national driving record. Moving between emirates does not reset your balance.
Can I appeal a black points decision?
