How to Renew Your Abu Dhabi Driving License
Abu Dhabi driving license renewal is handled through the TAMM e-government platform — either online or at a TAMM Customer Happiness Center in person. If you have no outstanding traffic fines and a valid eye test ready, the online process takes approximately 6 minutes and your digital license is available immediately on completion.
Before you start, check two things: your license expiry date (printed on the front of your card) and whether you have any unpaid fines. Outstanding fines block the renewal process entirely and must be settled first.
License Validity: How Long Does Your License Last?
| Visa Status | License Validity |
|---|---|
| UAE and GCC Nationals | 10 years |
| Residents (valid residence visa) | 5 years |
You can renew up to 6 months before the expiry date. If you renew early, your new license validity runs from your current expiry date — not from the renewal date — so renewing early does not shorten your license period.
Online Renewal via TAMM: Step by Step
Step 1: Log in with UAE Pass
Go to the TAMM website (tamm.abudhabi) or open the TAMM app on your phone. Log in using UAE Pass — the national digital identity system linked to your Emirates ID. If you have not set up UAE Pass yet, you can do so from the app using your Emirates ID details.
Step 2: Navigate to Driving License Renewal
Search for “driving license renewal” in the TAMM services directory, or go to Transport & Vehicles → Driving Licenses → Renew Driving License. Select the renewal option that matches your license category (standard vehicle is the most common).
Step 3: Settle Any Outstanding Fines
TAMM will automatically display any traffic fines linked to your license. You cannot proceed until these are cleared. Pay using card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay directly within TAMM. Once settled, return to the renewal flow.
Step 4: Upload Your Eye Test Certificate
A valid eye test from an ITC-approved optician is required for renewal. The test costs approximately AED 100 and is typically valid for 1 year. If you already have a recent certificate, upload it. If not, visit an approved optician first — many can submit results directly to the TAMM system. Do not use an expired certificate; the system will reject it.
Step 5: Pay the Renewal Fee
Renewal fees are AED 100 (under 21, license valid for 1 year) or AED 300 (21 and over, license valid for 5 years for residents or 10 years for nationals). Pay securely within TAMM using your preferred payment method.
Step 6: Receive Your Renewed License
Your digital license is issued immediately and available in the TAMM app. It is valid for driving straight away — you do not need the physical card to be on the road. Your physical card is mailed to your registered address or available for collection at your nearest TAMM Customer Happiness Center within 5–7 business days.
In-Person Renewal at TAMM Customer Happiness Centers
If you prefer in person, or encounter issues with the online process, walk into any TAMM Customer Happiness Center with the following:
- Emirates ID (original and copy)
- Current driving license (or expired license if renewing after expiry)
- Eye test certificate from an approved optician
- Passport copy
- Proof of residence (tenancy contract or utility bill)
Staff handle the renewal at the counter. Eye tests are available on-site at most centers. Processing typically takes 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on queue length — mid-morning on a weekday is usually the quietest time.
Renewal Costs
| Item | Cost (AED) |
|---|---|
| License renewal fee (under 21) | 100 |
| License renewal fee (21 and over) | 300 |
| Eye test at approved optician | ~100 |
| Expedited processing (optional) | 50–100 |
| Typical total | 200–400 |
What Happens If Your License Expires?
If your license has passed its expiry date, you will be charged a late renewal fee of AED 10 for every month the license remains expired. This fee is added on top of the standard renewal fee when you complete the renewal through TAMM.
Beyond the delay fee, driving with an expired license is a traffic offense. The exact fines and penalties are set by Abu Dhabi Police and can change — check the TAMM portal or contact Abu Dhabi Police (800 2323) for current violation fees before driving with an expired license.
- Late renewal fee: AED 10 per month overdue (charged at time of renewal)
- Insurance implications: driving without a valid license may void your insurance cover for any incident
- Renewal blocked: all outstanding traffic fines must be cleared before TAMM will process your renewal
Renew before or on your expiry date to avoid delay fees entirely.

Unpaid fines blocking renewal
Pay all fines through the TAMM app before attempting renewal. You can view and pay fines without starting the renewal process — go to Traffic Services → Traffic Fines first, clear everything, then proceed to renewal.
Eye test rejected
Only eye tests from ITC-approved opticians are accepted. If your test was done at a non-approved clinic, you need to redo it. Results older than 12 months are also rejected. Check the date on your certificate before uploading it.
UAE Pass login failing
Ensure your Emirates ID is registered with UAE Pass. If the app does not recognise your ID, you may need to re-verify using the UAE Pass app. If login issues persist after attempting re-verification, visit a TAMM center in person — this resolves most account issues on the spot.
Visa status change affecting renewal
If your residence visa has changed (new employer, visa type change, family status change), the online system may flag an inconsistency. In these cases, visit a TAMM center in person with updated visa documentation for manual verification.
Lost or damaged license
You can renew even if your current license is lost or damaged. When applying in person, mention this at the counter. When applying online, proceed normally — the system does not require you to submit the old physical card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive legally with just the digital license in the TAMM app?
Yes. Your digital license in the TAMM app is legally valid for driving in Abu Dhabi. You do not need the physical card in hand to drive. If stopped by police, show the digital license on your phone.
If I renew 3 months early, do I lose 3 months of validity?
No. Your new license runs from your current expiry date, not from when you renew. Renewing early is always in your favour.
What if my foreign license expired before I arrived in Abu Dhabi?
An expired foreign license cannot be exchanged. You would need to either renew it in your home country first (which can take weeks) or enroll in the standard full training pathway in Abu Dhabi. Contact an ITC branch with your specific situation for the most current guidance.
Can I renew online from outside the UAE?
Technically yes if your UAE Pass account is active and your eye test is current, but in practice an eye test requires physical presence at an approved optician in the UAE. Plan your renewal for when you are in Abu Dhabi.
