What Is DARB?

DARB is Abu Dhabi’s electronic toll collection system. Cameras at toll gates read your vehicle’s number plate automatically as you pass through. There are no toll booths requiring you to stop — charges are deducted from your registered account. You receive a monthly statement showing all crossings and amounts.

The system funds road maintenance and manages traffic flow on high-demand routes. For new drivers, the key thing to know is that registration is mandatory if you own a vehicle in Abu Dhabi and your regular routes cross a toll gate.

Which Roads Have DARB Toll Gates?

DARB gates are located on several major Abu Dhabi routes. The main ones relevant to most drivers:

Sheikh Zayed Bridge — the main connection between Abu Dhabi island and the mainland; one of the most-used toll crossings
Sheikh Khalifa Bridge — second island bridge crossing, east of Sheikh Zayed Bridge
Al Maqtaa Bridge — southern island crossing near the heritage district
Mussafah Bridge — accessing the Mussafah industrial area

How Charges Work

Peak and off-peak rates

DARB uses a dynamic pricing model. Peak hours are 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Monday to Saturday. Sundays are toll-free. Motorcycles are charged at a lower rate than cars and SUVs.

Exact current rates are published on the official DARB portal. The toll for a standard car is AED 4 per crossing at any gate. There is no higher peak-hour amount — Sunday crossings are free, all other days are charged at AED 4. Verify current figures at the official DARB portal.

Multiple gates on one journey

Each gate you pass through is a separate charge. A round trip between Abu Dhabi island and the mainland can cross multiple bridges, each charged separately. Check your route to know how many gate crossings to expect. New drivers are sometimes surprised by bills that include several crossings from a single journey.

No caps (as of September 2025)

Daily and monthly caps were removed on 1 September 2025. Each crossing is now charged at AED 4 with no daily or monthly ceiling. Frequent commuters crossing multiple bridges daily should factor this into their monthly budget.

Online registration

Visit the DARB portal through the Abu Dhabi Municipality website
Enter your vehicle registration number
Create an account and link your vehicle
Add a payment method (credit card, debit card, or bank direct debit)
Receive confirmation that your vehicle is registered

Online registration is immediate. You can start crossing tolled roads as soon as confirmation is received.

In-person registration

Visit any Abu Dhabi Municipality office with your vehicle registration (Mulkiya), Emirates ID, and driving licence. Staff process registration on the same day.

Payment Methods and Top-Up

Automatic payment (recommended)

Link a credit card to your DARB account. Tolls are deducted automatically and you receive monthly invoices showing each crossing with date, time, gate, and amount. No action required between statements.

Prepaid account

Load credit in advance. Tolls draw from your balance. You can top up through the DARB website, app, at municipality offices, or through partner banks. Common top-up amounts: AED 50, 100, 200, 500. Set balance alerts so you are not caught with insufficient credit.

Bank direct debit

Monthly withdrawal from your registered bank account. Fully automatic; clear billing cycle.

What Happens If You Don’t Pay

DARB non-payment triggers escalating consequences. First-time violations result in fines; continued non-payment can lead to vehicle impoundment and licence suspension. Fines are also flagged in the RTA system, preventing registration renewal until cleared.

Unlike parking fines, DARB toll fines are strict. Always maintain sufficient credit in your account and check your statement monthly.

When You Sell Your Vehicle

Before transferring ownership, ensure all outstanding DARB charges are paid and request a final statement. The new owner must register the vehicle in their own name and set up their own DARB payment. If they do not, any post-transfer violations may be attributed to your account until ownership is formally updated in the RTA system.

What about rental cars?

Most rental companies pre-register their fleet with DARB and bill tolls to your account at the end of the rental. Confirm this before renting — some smaller companies pass the registration responsibility to you.

Can I dispute a DARB charge?

Yes. Contact DARB customer service within 30 days of the charge with evidence. Genuine errors (camera misread, wrong vehicle) are investigated and reversed if the evidence supports your claim.
